David Sullivan interview in the Daily Mail
Hate the paper but it is a good interview.

When did I miss that we had already made the Lanazini deal permanent?

No not quite. He's saying we've sold out our max number of season tickets in a 54k stadium - that's how I read it anyway.

"Does he say we have sold 54.000 season tickets for next year already?"

Why would he say that?

"just the reality that clubs need groups of people working together to function well."

and that's not happened at the clubs in the relegation zone. All three have shit owners and it's jobs for the boys which ends in failure.

I'm sure that happens in football too. It's not a question of manager vs DoF, just the reality that clubs need groups of people working together to function well.

Re: David Sullivan interview in the Daily Mail
DoF works quite well in American sports but even there, the manager sits in on the meetings and gives his input

"our success in the transfer market has been exceptional since we took responsibility out of the manager's hands."

But we haven't, the manager has the final say on our transfers

Re: David Sullivan interview in the Daily Mail
I'm sure he did have a voice regarding transfers but it should be the final voice and I don't believe that was the case

It could well be said that National Service would be a good thing but that's for another discussion

Villa has been car crash waiting to happen

Newcastle i dont think actually bought to bad last summer just McClaren is shit. Oh and they are run worse than a sunday league side

Re: David Sullivan interview in the Daily Mail
Most successful sides use directors of football. All have an infrastructure of some sort. It's a complete nonsense to pick out three failing teams and pick on the fact they have a certain employee. Nobody's complaining about Leicester's DoF right now.

And as has been discussed on this thread, our success in the transfer market has been exceptional since we took responsibility out of the manager's hands.

Imo these sort of discussions belong with the 'we need National Service' domain of old codgers living in the past. Every club needs support staff, these are multi-million pound businesses.

Well, Sherwood, or Sherwood plus a committee, or a committee without Sherwood having any say whatsoever - whatever combination it was, the players they recruited didn't perform.

Personally, I would guess Sherwood had a large say in all transfers, but it's a guess, based on I don't believe a manager isn't consulted regarding recruitment.

Not saying you're wrong

My posts are really at Alex V and the mental system he's long championed as the way clubs should be run.

whufcroe 6:23 Tue Mar 22
Re: David Sullivan interview in the Daily Mail
Sherwood didn't spend the money and that's the problem but these managers like Sherwood, McLaren, one of the many Sunderland managers before BFS don't really care as they gets millions for failing.

The only people that really suffer are the fans and in the cased of the bottom three, fuck em

Re: David Sullivan interview in the Daily Mail
Well you're basically agreeing with me.

whufcroe 6:19 Tue Mar 22
Re: David Sullivan interview in the Daily Mail
The major problem Villa had isn't selling your best players, it's selling your best players and replacing them with players the manager doesn't really want.

You basically had what Alex V buys into which is a director of football who picks the players and then gives them to a coach to try and mould into a team. That's fucking mental.

It may work abroad for the likes of Madrid who are buying the coach some of the best players in the world but it doesn't at the likes of Villa and it's no real shock to see the THREE team who used this system the most the ones in the three relegation spots.

Re: David Sullivan interview in the Daily Mail
I don't think much blame can be put at Sherwood's door. They've been mismanaged from the top for quite a few years.

In hindsight, they actually might have been better keeping him on.

Steve P 6:16 Tue Mar 22
Re: David Sullivan interview in the Daily Mail
Over the recent seasons, Villa raised enough money by selling players to recruit adequate replacements.

In the summer, Sherwood spent the Benteke money on what turns out to be a load of dross. It doesn't 'just happen'. It happens when you aren't very good at what you are supposed to be doing.

Re: David Sullivan interview in the Daily Mail
i think a high % of football fans could look at a back 4 that includes Lescott and Richards and expect the worst.
